Sex chairs are pieces of furniture shaped to hold bodies at angles a bed cannot: higher, more upright, or tilted. They range from a sturdy dining seat you already own to curved foam chaises, bouncing stools and bondage chairs. This guide explains the main types, how to pick good furniture for the job, which sex chair positions are easiest on the body, and how to keep bondage on a chair safe.

What is a sex chair?
A sex chair is any seat used to support a position during sex. Some are made for the job, with curves, handles or a bounce built in. Others are ordinary furniture used with a little planning.
The appeal is simple. A chair changes height and angle without either partner holding their own weight. That can make some positions easier to reach and easier to sustain, especially for people who find kneeling or lying flat tiring.
You do not need special furniture to try this. Most people start with what they have, then decide whether a dedicated piece is worth the space and money.
Sex chairs and furniture compared
Each type solves a different problem. Use this table to match the furniture to what you want from it.
| Type | What it is | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sturdy everyday chair | An armless dining or kitchen chair with four legs | Trying it for free | Wobbly joints, wheels, swivel seats, folding frames |
| Armchair | A padded seat with arms | Lap positions with something to hold | Arms can limit how legs spread or straddle |
| Sex chaise | A curved foam lounge, often with a washable cover | Reclined positions and back support | Size, price and how visible it is in a room |
| Sex stool or bouncing chair | A small seat with springs or an open centre | Rhythm with less effort from the person on top | Balance; needs a grippy floor |
| Inflatable seat or chaise | A blow-up curved seat | Low cost and easy storage | Punctures and a less stable surface |
| Bondage chair | A frame with attachment points for restraints | Experienced couples who want restraint play | Weight limits and tipping; never leave someone alone in it |
| Wedges and bolsters | Firm foam shapes that go on a bed, sofa or chair | Adding lift to furniture you already own | Cheap foam that squashes flat |
Our rule of thumb: if a seat moves when you lean on one corner, it is not safe for sex. Stability matters more than any feature.
How do you choose the best sex chair?
Pick for stability first, then fit, then comfort. A beautiful piece that wobbles is the wrong choice.
Stability and weight rating
Look for four solid legs, firm joints and no wheels or swivel. Dedicated sex furniture usually lists a weight limit; check it covers both partners, because movement adds load. If a maker gives no rating, treat that as a reason to pass.
Seat height
Good chairs for sex let the seated person put both feet flat on the floor. That gives them control and lets them push up or shift without slipping. A standing partner also benefits when the seat is roughly hip height or a little lower.
Arms or no arms
Arms give you something to hold and help with balance in lap positions. An armless chair leaves more room for legs to straddle or wrap. Many couples find an armless seat more flexible for a first try.
Materials and cleaning
Wipe-clean faux leather, sealed wood or a removable, washable cover all make life easier. Upholstered seats are harder to clean, so a waterproof throw on top protects the fabric.
Space and discretion
A dedicated chaise is large and recognisable to some guests. An inflatable seat or a set of wedges can go in a closet. Measure your room, and the door you need to get it through, before you buy.
What are the easiest sex chair positions?
These six are good starting points. Go slowly, talk as you go and adjust if anything strains.
1. Facing lap seat
One partner sits upright with feet flat; the other sits on their lap, facing them, knees either side of the hips. It is close and easy to talk in. The person on top controls the pace by pushing through their feet or knees. Skip it if the seated partner has knee or hip pain from the extra weight.
2. Reverse lap seat
The same set-up, but the person on top faces away. Their feet can rest on the floor, which takes weight off the seated partner. Hands are free for touch. It suits couples who want less eye contact and more control for the person on top.
3. Edge of the chair
One partner sits right at the front of the seat and leans back; the other kneels or stands in front. This works for oral sex and for penetration if heights line up. A cushion under the kneeling partner's knees helps.
4. Chair as a support
One partner stands and leans forward with their hands on the seat or the backrest; the other stands behind. The seat takes the place of a wall or bed edge. Push it against a wall first so it cannot slide.
5. One foot up
Both partners stand, and one rests a foot on the seat. Raising one leg opens the hips without anyone holding weight. Only try this on a seat that cannot tip.
6. Reclined chaise
On a sex chaise or a reclining armchair, one partner leans back into the curve while the other kneels or lies alongside. The furniture supports the back and neck, which makes it one of the more restful options.

Are sex chairs good for back pain?
They can help, but the right position depends on the kind of back pain. Researchers at the University of Waterloo tracked spine motion in 10 couples across common positions. Lead researcher Natalie Sidorkewicz said: "Sex positions that are suitable for one type of back pain aren't appropriate for another kind of pain" (University of Waterloo, 2014).
The same release notes that up to 84 percent of men with low back pain report a significant drop in how often they have sex, as do 73 percent of women. For men whose pain gets worse with bending or long sitting, the team suggested they "use a hip-hinging motion rather than thrusting with their spines."
A firm seat can make hip hinging easier, because the seated or leaning partner has a fixed point to move from. If sitting for long periods makes your pain worse, though, a seated position may not suit you. A physiotherapist can tell you which movements to favour.
How do you do bondage on a chair safely?
Agree on limits before anyone is tied, keep restraints loose, and never leave a restrained person alone. A seat adds one more risk than a bed: it can tip over.
- Talk first. Agree what will happen, and pick a safe word or a signal that works if speech is hard.
- Use a seat that cannot fall. No wheels, no folding frames, and ideally the back against a wall.
- Keep wrist ties loose. You should be able to slide a finger under any cuff or tie.
- Check hands and feet often. Tingling, numbness, coldness or colour change means release now.
- Keep safety shears nearby if you use rope or tape, so you can cut someone free in seconds.
- Never restrain the neck, and never tie someone to anything that could fall with them.
Why the care with wrists? Tight cuffs can press a nerve on the thumb side of the wrist. Emergency doctors call it handcuff neuropathy: "compression of the superficial radial nerve against the radius," which can take weeks to recover (University of Maryland School of Medicine). Our bondage gear guide and handcuff positions guide cover restraints in more detail.
Buying sex furniture in Canada
With sex furniture, Canada's long shipping distances matter. Large pieces are bulky, so check the boxed size, the delivery method and whether the packaging is plain before you order. Read the assembly needs and the weight rating on the listing, and look for a removable, washable cover.
To be clear about our own range: Red Pleasures does not sell dedicated sex chairs or a chaise right now. If you want furniture-style lift without a new piece of furniture, a firm wedge on a bed or sofa does a lot of the same work. For hanging options, our door sex swing and bondage furniture guide compares swings and frames.

How do you clean sex furniture?
Clean it after every use, following the maker's instructions for the material. Most hard surfaces wipe down with warm water and mild soap. Removable covers usually go in the washing machine; check the label first.
Protect anything upholstered with a waterproof throw or a towel, since body fluids and lube can stain fabric. Silicone lube does not rinse out with water alone, so a water-based formula is easier on furniture.
Inspect furniture now and then. Tighten loose screws, look for cracks in frames and check inflatables for slow leaks before you rely on them.
FAQ
What is a sex chair?
It is any chair or seat used to support positions during sex. Some are purpose-built, like curved chaises and bouncing stools, and some are ordinary sturdy chairs.
Can you use a regular chair for sex?
Yes, if it is sturdy, armless or wide-armed, and has four legs with no wheels or swivel. Test it by leaning on one corner; if it moves, choose another.
What is the best sex chair for beginners?
A solid seat you already own, plus a firm foam wedge if you need more lift. Try that first, then decide whether a dedicated chaise is worth the money and space.
Are sex chairs good for a bad back?
Sometimes. University of Waterloo researchers found the best position depends on the type of back pain, so ask a physiotherapist which movements suit you.
Is bondage on a chair safe?
It can be. Agree on limits and a safe word, use a seat that cannot tip, keep ties loose enough to slide a finger under, check hands for numbness and never leave the person alone.
How much weight can a sex chair hold?
It depends on the maker, so read the listed weight rating. Make sure it covers both partners, and skip any furniture that gives no rating at all.
Does Red Pleasures sell sex chairs?
Not right now. We stock positioning wedges, a waterproof throw and beginner restraints, which add lift and protection to furniture you already have.
