Bondage Gear Guide: Types of BDSM Restraints and How to Choose (2026)

Bondage gear guide: a couple relaxing together at home before choosing their first restraints

Bondage gear is a wide category, and most of it is not for a first night. Cuffs, under bed restraints, spreader bars, rope, tape, collars and full bondage kits each restrict movement differently. They need different skills and come off at different speeds. This Red Pleasures guide explains every type of BDSM restraint and compares them in one table. It shows the four sets we stock in Canada with live prices. It also sets out the safety rules that matter more than any purchase.

Quick answer: For a first set of bondage gear, choose padded, adjustable cuffs with a buckle or hook-and-loop closure, and anchor them to each other or to a bed restraint system rather than to furniture. Our lowest-cost starter is the Sex & Mischief Introductory BDSM Kit ($41.88 CAD); the SEI MIO thigh, wrist and ankle set ($75.58 CAD) needs no furniture at all. Leave rope, bars and anything lockable for later.

What counts as bondage gear?

Bondage gear is any equipment used to restrict a consenting partner's movement, plus the accessories that shape the scene around it. The restraint itself can be soft (cuffs, straps, tape, rope) or rigid (a spreader bar, a bondage chair). It can anchor to the other limb, to the bed, or to nothing at all. Blindfolds, collars, gags and paddles are often sold alongside it as BDSM sex equipment. They do not restrain anything; they change sensation or signal a role.

Two features separate good BDSM restraints from costume pieces. One is a wide, padded contact surface that spreads pressure. The other is a release you can open one-handed in seconds. Everything in this guide is judged on those two points first, and on looks last. If you want the buying order rather than the taxonomy, our bondage for beginners guide covers what to buy first, second and last.

Types of bondage gear compared

This table is the whole decision for most couples. Read the "release speed" column twice; it is the one that keeps people safe.

What are the gentlest sex restraints to start with?

Padded wrist cuffs are the gentlest sex restraints. The band does the holding, the hardware does the connecting, and both come undone in seconds. A good pair is 4 to 6 cm wide and lined with neoprene, fabric or leather. It closes with a buckle or hook-and-loop. Avoid bare metal handcuffs for anything beyond a few minutes. They have no give, they press on the nerves at the inner wrist, and a dropped key turns a game into a problem.

Thigh straps and wrist-to-thigh sets are the next step up. They bind a wrist to the same-side thigh, which restricts the arms without any anchor point, so they suit apartments, travel and beds with nothing to tie to. Our bondage cuffs guide covers wrist versus ankle sizing, materials and closures in detail.

Under bed restraints and bondage sheets: which bed restraints work?

Under bed restraints are the easiest way to tie someone to a bed that has no posts or slats. They are also the most searched piece of bondage sex equipment after cuffs. Four adjustable straps meet at a central strap that runs under the mattress. The weight of the mattress and the sleeper holds it in place, and the four cuffs come out at the corners. Nothing is drilled, nothing shows when the bed is made.

A bondage bed sheet does the same job from the top. It is a fitted sheet with hook-and-loop anchor pads that stick anywhere on its surface. That lets you place a cuff mid-mattress rather than only at the corners. It costs more and it is the thing you sleep on, so it is machine washable. Posts, rails and slats also work with ordinary long straps, as long as the frame cannot tip or slide. Our bed restraints guide explains what anchors where, bed by bed.

What does a bondage restraint bar do?

A bondage restraint bar, usually called a spreader bar, is a rigid rod with a cuff at each end. It holds the ankles or wrists a fixed distance apart. It removes the option of closing the legs or bringing the hands together, which is the whole appeal. Because the bar is rigid, it changes how a person can roll, kneel or stand.

Buy one that adjusts in length and has padded cuffs. Start at the shortest setting. Keep early sessions on a bed or a soft floor, because a bar removes the ability to catch a fall. Many bars have extra rings so they can be joined to cuffs or to a bed system. That is where positions get interesting. Our spreader bar guide covers length, positions and the checks that keep it safe.

Rope and bondage tape: when are they the right choice?

Bondage tape is the right choice when you want the look of a wrap without the skill of a knot. It is a thin PVC film that sticks only to itself, never to skin or hair. It leaves no residue and costs very little. The catch is release. It comes off by unwinding or cutting, so blunt-tipped safety shears must be in the room.

Rope is the most flexible restraint and the one that needs the most learning. A wrist tie placed over the wrong spot can compress the radial nerve in minutes. A knot that tightens under load cannot be undone in a hurry. Start with a soft cotton or jute length. Learn one non-tightening cuff tie from a class or a book, and keep shears within reach every time. Our bondage rope guide compares jute, cotton, nylon and silk, and the bondage tape guide covers safe wrapping.

Collars, blindfolds and kits: the BDSM bondage gear that is not a restraint

A collar signals a role rather than restricting movement. A blindfold removes sight so touch feels sharper. A starter kit bundles cuffs with one or two of these, so a couple can try several ideas for one price. None of them hold a limb, but they change how the restraint feels. They are often the right first purchase for a couple who are curious rather than committed.

Two rules carry over from restraints. Nothing goes around the neck that can tighten, so choose a collar with a fixed buckle and no slip ring for pulling. A blindfold removes eye contact. So agree a spoken safeword and a non-verbal signal (a firm double tap means stop) before it goes on. Our safewords and scene negotiation guide is a five-minute read that covers both.

What bondage gear does Red Pleasures stock? 4 sets, checked today

We carry a small, deliberately beginner-friendly range rather than a wall of restraints. Every item below was checked against the live store on 22 October 2026. Prices are in CAD and can change; the product page is always current. We do not currently stock standalone rope, bondage tape or under bed restraint straps. Those sections above are retailer-neutral.

1. Sex & Mischief Introductory BDSM Kit with Cuffs, Blindfold and Whip ($41.88 CAD)

This is the box we suggest to couples who want to try three ideas for the price of one. It holds a pair of black furry-lined metal handcuffs with nickel-free hardware, a satin blindfold, and a 40 cm whip. The materials are elastic, polyester, vinyl and metal, per Sex & Mischief. The fur spreads the load, but the metal underneath has no give. Keep cuff time short and keep the key where you can see it. Who should skip it: anyone who already knows they want padded adjustable cuffs for longer scenes. The SEI MIO set below is the better buy for that.

2. SEI MIO Adjustable Thigh, Wrist and Ankle Restraint Set ($75.58 CAD)

The SEI MIO set is our pick for anyone whose bed offers nothing to tie to. It includes adjustable straps for the thighs, wrists and ankles in a smooth, skin-friendly fabric. Each strap joins limb to limb, so the whole set works on a sofa, in a hotel or on a platform bed. Adjustable closures make the two-finger fit rule easy to meet. The hardware is strong enough for a real pull, per the maker. Who should skip it: people who want the fixed-distance feel of a bar, or the stretched-out positions a bed system allows.

3. Spartacus Adjustable Steel Spreader Bar with Leather Cuffs ($147.48 CAD)

The Spartacus bar is a robust steel rod that adjusts in length, with supple leather cuffs at each end, per Spartacus. It is the piece for couples who have outgrown cuffs and want the particular helplessness of legs or arms held apart. Start at the shortest setting on a bed. Remember that the wearer cannot catch themselves if they lose balance standing. The leather needs a wipe and occasional conditioning rather than a wash. We hold very few units of this one, so the product page is the only reliable stock check. Skip it as a first purchase; it is a second or third one.

4. Sportsheets King Size Bondage Bed Sheet with Restraints and Cuffs ($310.00 CAD)

The original Sportsheet is a machine-washable king fitted sheet with four hook-and-loop anchor pads that adhere anywhere on its surface. Four neoprene cuffs fasten around wrists or ankles and also work on their own, per Sportsheets. Because the pads move, you are not limited to the four corners. Nothing goes under the mattress or around the frame. It is the most expensive item we stock in this category and it only fits a king bed, so measure first. Who should skip it: anyone on a queen or smaller. Also anyone who wants to spend under $100 to find out whether restraint play is for them.

How do you choose bondage gear for the first time?

Choose by release speed first, anchor point second, and looks last. The rule we give customers: if you cannot open it one-handed, in the dark, in under five seconds, it is the wrong restraint for a beginner. Then match the gear to your room and your bed.

  • No posts, no headboard, shared walls: limb-to-limb straps (the SEI MIO set) or an under bed restraint system.
  • A sturdy frame with rails or slats: padded cuffs plus long straps, or a bondage sheet if you want anchor points anywhere.
  • Curious, not committed, under $50: a starter kit, and keep the metal cuffs for short scenes only.
  • You already use cuffs and want more: a spreader bar on a bed, then bed systems, then rope with proper instruction.
  • Either of you has a wrist, shoulder or circulation condition: wider bands, shorter sessions, and a word with your doctor before anything new.

Whatever you choose, buy the padded, adjustable version over the decorative one, and buy ankle sizes separately rather than assuming one pair fits both.

Safety rules for BDSM restraints

Restraints put sustained pressure on exactly the joints where nerves run close to the skin. So the safety rules are short and non-negotiable. The Cleveland Clinic describes nerve compression as causing "pain, numbness or tingling around the compression (usually a joint like your wrist, elbow or ankle)". MedlinePlus, from the US National Library of Medicine, lists pressure from badly fitting casts, splints and braces among the causes of nerve damage. It adds that "tingling or burning in the arms and legs may be an early sign of nerve damage." A restraint is pressure of the same kind.

  • Two fingers of slack under every cuff, strap or wrap, at the wrist and the ankle alike.
  • Numbness, tingling, cold or colour change means release now, then talk. Ask for a wiggle of fingers and toes every few minutes.
  • Agree a safeword and a non-verbal signal before anything closes, because a blindfold or gag removes speech and eye contact.
  • Keep blunt-tipped safety shears in the room, not in a drawer elsewhere, for tape, rope, a jammed buckle or a lost key.
  • Never leave a restrained person alone, not to answer the door, not for a minute, and never let anyone fall asleep fastened.
  • Nothing around the neck that can tighten, and no restraint that loads a joint at an angle.
  • Keep early sessions short and loosen everything at intervals rather than trusting one check at the start.

Close every scene with aftercare. Undo everything slowly, offer water and warmth, and check for sore spots while they are easy to notice. If numbness lasts beyond a few minutes after release, see a doctor. It is not something to sleep on.

How do you clean and store bondage gear?

Match the method to the material. Neoprene, fabric and vinyl take mild unscented soap and warm water, then a full air dry. Leather wants a damp cloth and occasional conditioner, never a soak. Steel wipes clean. A bondage sheet goes in the washing machine. Dry everything completely before it goes in a drawer. Check stitching and rings each time. Keep anything that touches genital skin personal to one person. Our toy cleaning guide covers the rest.

FAQ

What bondage gear should a beginner buy first?

Padded, adjustable wrist cuffs with a buckle or hook-and-loop closure. Add a way to anchor them that does not depend on furniture: a limb-to-limb strap set or under bed restraints. Add a blindfold if you like. Leave rope, bars, lockable hardware and furniture for later.

Are under bed restraints safe?

Yes, when the cuffs are padded, the straps are adjustable and someone stays in the room. The mattress holds the central strap and nothing is fixed to the frame. Each cuff releases in seconds. Check circulation at the wrists and ankles every few minutes, as with any restraint.

What is the difference between bondage gear and BDSM equipment?

Bondage gear restrains movement: cuffs, straps, bars, rope, tape and bed systems. BDSM equipment is the wider set that also includes sensation and role items such as blindfolds, collars, paddles, floggers and clamps. Most starter kits mix the two.

Can you use real police handcuffs?

We advise against it. Rigid metal with no padding presses directly on the wrist nerves. The ratchet can tighten by accident, and a lost key means a trip to a locksmith or worse. Furry-lined metal cuffs are a short-scene compromise; padded adjustable cuffs are better.

How long can someone stay in restraints?

There is no safe fixed number, which is why checks beat timers. Loosen and reposition at intervals and ask for finger and toe wiggles. Release at the first sign of numbness, tingling, cold or colour change. Nobody sleeps while fastened.

Do I need safety shears for cuffs?

Yes, even for buckles. Shears cost very little and solve the cases you cannot plan for. That means a jammed buckle, a lost key, a strap that has twisted tight, or tape and rope that will not unwind fast enough. Keep them within arm's reach of the bed.

What should you never attach restraints to?

Anything that can move, tip or break. That includes lamps, shelving, towel rails, bedding, decorative headboards and door handles that open inward. Test an anchor by hauling on it with both hands first. Nothing goes around the neck.
