Kegel trainers & weights
How to choose
The things that actually matter when you're choosing — plain language, no spec-sheet jargon.
What these are — and aren't. These are exercise accessories: equipment for pelvic-floor exercise routines, the way hand weights are equipment for arm day. They are not medical devices, and buying one isn't a substitute for professional advice. If you're working through pelvic-floor concerns, see a pelvic-floor physiotherapist first — they can tell you whether and how a trainer fits your situation.
"Kegel balls," "ben wa balls," "kegel weights" — same shelf, different names. You'll see all three terms online. They describe the same category: small weighted balls or trainers worn internally, so the muscles you're exercising have something to work against — resistance, in gym terms. "Ben wa balls" is the older name; "kegel trainers" is what the category has grown into, now that app-connected options exist alongside simple weights.
Weighted set or app trainer — the one real decision. The Je Joue Ami set is simple and screen-free: three progressive steps that change in size and weight as your routine does, no batteries, nothing to pair, nothing to update. The Perifit is the opposite philosophy: a biofeedback sensor connects to a phone app that turns each session into guided games, so you can see effort on screen instead of guessing. Neither is better — one is a set of dumbbells, the other is a gym class with an instructor. Choose based on how you actually like to exercise, because the one you'll use consistently is the right one.
How a session works. Short and structured beats long and vague. Follow the included guide or the app: sessions are typically minutes, not hours, and wearing a trainer for extended periods isn't the goal and isn't recommended. Position matters too — many routines start lying down, where the muscles work against less gravity, before progressing. Breathe normally; holding your breath while squeezing is the most common form mistake in any exercise, this one included.
Material and design. Everything here is body-safe silicone with a retrieval cord. Non-porous silicone is the standard worth insisting on for anything worn internally — it doesn't absorb fluids, and it cleans up completely. Both the Ami and the Perifit meet it.
Making it comfortable. A little water-based lubricant makes insertion comfortable — skip silicone lube, which reacts with silicone surfaces. Comfort is information: nothing here should hurt, and if something does, stop and check in with a professional rather than pushing through. That rule has no exceptions.
Cleaning and care. Wash with warm water and mild unscented soap before and after every session, dry completely, and store in a breathable pouch away from other silicone products. The Perifit's sensor end shouldn't be submerged — clean it as its manual directs.
Who should talk to a professional first. If you're pregnant or recently postpartum, recovering from surgery, experiencing pain, or noticing symptoms that concern you — a pelvic-floor physiotherapist is the right first stop, before any purchase. They exist exactly for this, many Canadian clinics take self-referrals, and a single assessment beats a hundred internet opinions, including ours.
A note on expectations. Like any exercise equipment, these support a routine — they don't do the exercise for you, and consistency matters more than the gear. We'd rather tell you that before you buy than have you learn it after.
