Butt plug sizes are confusing because every brand labels them differently. One maker's "large" is another maker's "small." This guide gives you a simple size chart, shows you how to read the three numbers that matter, and helps you pick a first size that feels good instead of overwhelming. We finish with the eight plugs we stock in Canada, sorted from the slimmest at 0.85 inches to the widest at 2.25 inches.

Butt plug size chart
There is no industry standard, so we use one simple scale across every guide on our site. It is based on the widest diameter of the bulb, because that is what your body has to open around.
| Size class | Widest diameter | Circumference | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | Under 1.25 in (under 32 mm) | Under about 3.9 in | First-timers; short or longer wear |
| Medium | 1.25 to 1.5 in (32 to 38 mm) | About 3.9 to 4.7 in | People already comfortable with a small size |
| Large | 1.5 to 2 in (38 to 51 mm) | About 4.7 to 6.3 in | Experienced users who want more fullness |
| Extra large | Over 2 in (over 51 mm) | Over about 6.3 in | Gradual training only |
Circumference is the diameter multiplied by 3.14. Some shops list girth instead of width, so this column lets you compare the two. If a listing gives only a name like "medium," look for the maker's spec sheet before you buy.
How are butt plug sizes measured?
Three numbers tell you almost everything: the widest diameter, the insertable length and the width of the base. Diameter decides how much stretch you feel. Length decides how deep the toy sits. The base decides whether the toy stays safely outside your body.
- Widest diameter. The width of the bulb at its fullest point. This is the number to compare first.
- Insertable length. How much of the toy goes inside, from the tip to the neck. Total length also counts the base, so it is always a little longer.
- Neck. The slim part just above the base. Your sphincter closes around it, which is what holds the toy in place.
- Base width. It must be clearly wider than the bulb. A wide, flared base is the safety feature that stops the toy from slipping inside.
Small numbers hide big changes. Area grows with the square of the diameter. A 1.5-inch bulb looks only half an inch wider than a 1-inch bulb, but its cross-section is more than twice as large. That is why stepping up feels bigger than the label suggests.
What size butt plug should a beginner start with?
Start small: about 1 inch (25 mm) or less at the widest point. Medical News Today, in a guide reviewed by E. Mimi Arquilla, DO, says a person using a butt plug for the first time "needs to pick a small one."
A small butt plug lets you learn how insertion, the neck and the base feel without much stretch. If you already enjoy fingers or a slim toy, you may be comfortable up to about 1.25 inches. Choose the smaller option whenever you are unsure. A plug that feels easy is one you will actually use.
A small anal plug also suits longer wear and play during other activities, because there is less pressure to notice.
How do I know my size before buying?
Use what you already know is comfortable. If you have used a toy before, check its diameter and start at or just below it. If you have not, a graduated training set takes the guessing out, because you can try each step at home before settling on one size.

Each pick in detail
Here is what each one is like, who it suits and who should pass.
1. Lovense Lush Anal ($191.89 CAD)
This is the slimmest option we carry, with a 21.5 mm insertable width, about 0.85 inches. Lovense describes it as petite and lists first-time anal toy buyers among the people it suits. It has a flat head for comfort, a T-shaped flared base, and vibrations you can control in the Lovense app, close by or from far away. Lovense rates it IPX7 waterproof, quiet at 33 to 37 dB, and good for up to 237 minutes per charge.
Who should skip it: anyone on a tight budget who only wants a plain small toy. It costs more because of the motor and app.
2. Gender X Gold Digger Training Set ($71.80 CAD for three)
Three rose-gold aluminum plugs at 0.9, 1.0 and 1.1 inches across, each with three rounded beads on the shaft and a black gem base. The small steps make it an easy way to learn your size at home. The maker lists the metal as nonporous and phthalate-free, and the set is waterproof. Metal also holds warmth or coolness if you rest it in water first.
Who should skip it: anyone who already knows 1.1 inches is too small for them.
3. Lovense Hush 2, 1 inch ($113.89 CAD)
The smallest Hush 2 is body-safe silicone with a tapered tip, 3.86 inches insertable and a 2.64-inch base. A button on the base cycles through speeds and patterns, and the Lovense app adds remote control. It charges in 60 minutes and runs up to 240 minutes. For one plug that suits a beginner and still feels interesting later, this is our first pick.
Who should skip it: people who want a toy with no charging port to look after.
4. b-Vibe Bounce ($42.00 CAD)
Bounce is the medium step. It is soft, seamless silicone with graduated beads, 1.3 inches at its thickest and 4.4 inches insertable, which makes it one of the longer plugs we stock. A thick flared base with a finger ring makes removal simple. b-Vibe aims it at intermediate users who want a feeling of fullness.
Who should skip it: first-timers. Start smaller, then come back to it.
5. b-Vibe Jewel Heart Set ($43.90 CAD for two)
Two metal pieces with heart-shaped gem bases, 1.34 and 1.59 inches across. The pair bridges medium and large, so it works as the next step after a small set. The zinc-alloy bodies are heavy, at 85 g and 140 g, which some people love for the sense of weight. b-Vibe advises starting with the smaller plug.
Who should skip it: anyone planning to wear one while walking around for long. The larger one is heavy.
6. Lovense Hush 2, 1.5, 1.75 and 2.25 inch ($143.89 to $152.89 CAD)
The bigger Hush 2 sizes share the same silicone body, button control and app as the 1-inch model. The 1.5-inch Hush 2 ($143.89) is 3.75 inches insertable. The 1.75-inch Hush 2 ($144.89) is aimed at intermediate users. The 2.25-inch Hush 2 ($152.89) is our widest plug, which Lovense says is for people "having already tried some smaller sizes."
Who should skip them: anyone who has not yet been comfortable at a smaller size. Our large butt plug guide covers these three in depth.
Long butt plugs: does length matter?
Length matters far less than width for comfort. A long butt plug sits deeper but does not stretch the opening more. On our shelf, listed insertable lengths run from 3.75 to 4.45 inches. The Bounce, at 4.4 inches, and the two larger Hush 2 sizes, at 4.45 inches, have the longest listed insertable lengths.
If you want a long anal plug, look for a gentle taper and a flexible body, and go slowly. Stop if you feel sharp or deep pain. We do not stock extra-long designs today.
What is a tunnel butt plug?
A tunnel butt plug is hollow, with an open channel running through the middle from the tip to the base. It keeps the opening gently held open, which some people enjoy as a sensation of its own. Sizing works the same way: read the outer diameter, not the label.
The usual rules apply, and more strictly. Choose body-safe, non-porous material, a wide base and the smallest size you are unsure about. Hollow toys also need careful cleaning inside the channel. We do not stock tunnel plugs right now, so we cannot recommend a specific one.
What is the biggest butt plug size?
There is no upper limit in the market, and labels such as "huge" or "giant" mean different things at every brand. The biggest butt plug we stock is the Lovense Hush 2 at 2.25 inches (57 mm) across. We do not sell anything wider, by choice.
Cleveland Clinic warns that the lining of the anus is thin, and "thin tissue means it can tear easily." Very wide sizes take long, gradual practice. If you are building toward the biggest anal plug sizes, the step-by-step method in our large butt plug guide applies.
How do you move up a size safely?
Move up only when your current size feels easy, and take one step at a time. Cleveland Clinic puts it plainly: "Start gradually and move your way up to what you're comfortable with."
- Warm up first. Use a finger or your current size before the new one.
- Use plenty of lube. Cleveland Clinic notes that "your anus doesn't create its own lubricant."
- Breathe and go slowly. Your sphincters are, in Cleveland Clinic's words, "elastic rings of muscle" that relax with time.
- Keep sessions short. Medical News Today suggests starting with "a few minutes at a time."
- Step by small amounts. A quarter inch is plenty. Remember that area grows faster than the number.
Our rule of thumb: if you are not sure you are ready for the next size, you are not ready yet. Stay a few more sessions where you are.
Shape, material and base
A well-made design has a tapered tip, a slim neck and a flared base, and is made of body-safe, non-porous material. Shape changes how a size feels as much as the diameter does.
A gradual taper lets the muscle open slowly. A slim neck lets it close again, so the toy stays put without pressure. Medical News Today says people should "only use butt plugs with a flared base," because the base keeps the toy outside the body.
Silicone is soft and has a little give, which suits most first-timers. Metal is firm, heavier and easy to clean, and many people like the weight. Medical News Today warns that porous materials "may absorb germs that can lead to infections, even if an individual always washes the toy." Our body-safe materials guide explains what to avoid.
Is it safe, and how do you clean one?
A butt plug of the right size is safe for most people when it has a flared base and you use enough lube. Mild pressure is normal; pain is not. Medical News Today says it "should not be painful to insert," and Cleveland Clinic says to "stop immediately" at sharp, shooting pain.
- Health conditions. Medical News Today advises that people with "hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or prostate conditions" talk with their doctor first.
- Wear time. Some people suggest no more than 2 or 3 hours, but Medical News Today calls this "purely anecdotal." Start with minutes.
- Lube. Use water-based lube with silicone toys. Our silicone vs water-based lube guide explains why.
Wash the toy before and after each use with mild soap and warm water or a toy cleaner. Keep water away from a charging port unless the toy is rated waterproof. Never move a toy from the anus to the vagina without washing it first. For a full first-time walkthrough, read our beginner butt plug guide.
How we chose and measured
We started with every item in our butt plug collection that was in stock on the day of writing, and kept the ones with a published diameter. We left out prostate massagers and anal beads, which are shaped differently. Each size comes from the maker's listing on our store; circumference and area are our own arithmetic. Eight passed.
FAQ
What is a normal butt plug size?
There is no normal size. We suggest about 1 inch or less across for a first try, and fullness is personal, so bigger is not automatically better. Pick by comfort, not by the label.
What size butt plug should I get first?
About 1 inch (25 mm) or less at the widest point. If you are unsure, a training set lets you try several small sizes at home, one step at a time.
Is 1.5 inches big for a butt plug?
It is the top of medium and the start of large on our scale. Its cross-section is more than twice that of a 1-inch size, so most people work up to it.
Do butt plug sizes mean the same at every brand?
No. One brand's large can be another brand's small. Always compare the widest diameter in inches or millimetres, not the name.
How long is a typical butt plug?
Ours run from 3.75 to 4.45 inches insertable, where the maker lists it. Length changes how deep the toy sits, while width decides how much stretch you feel.
What is the smallest butt plug you sell?
The Lovense Lush Anal, with a 21.5 mm (about 0.85 inch) insertable width, at $191.89 CAD. Without a motor, the smallest is the 0.9-inch piece in the Gender X set.
What is the biggest butt plug you sell?
The Lovense Hush 2 at 2.25 inches (57 mm) across, $152.89 CAD. We do not stock anything wider.
