In this guide, a large butt plug means one wider than about 1.5 inches (38 mm) at its widest point. From that width up, practice, patience and plenty of lube matter more and more. This guide explains how sizes are measured, why each step up feels bigger than the number suggests, and how to size up without pain. We finish with six graduated plugs we stock in Canada, from training sets to our widest option.

What counts as a large butt plug?
Diameter is the number that matters. It is the width of the bulb at its widest point, and it decides how much your sphincter has to stretch. Length mostly changes how deep the toy sits.
Brands do not share one sizing system. One maker calls a plug "large" at 1.1 inches, while the widest Hush 2 we carry measures 2.25 inches. So ignore the label and read the spec sheet. Look for three numbers: maximum diameter, insertable length and the width of the base.
Here is the house rule of thumb we use at Red Pleasures:
- Small: under about 1.25 inches (32 mm). A good first plug.
- Medium: about 1.25 to 1.5 inches (32 to 38 mm).
- Large: about 1.5 to 2 inches (38 to 51 mm).
- Extra large: over 2 inches (51 mm).
Girth, or circumference, is the distance around the widest part. Some shops list it instead of diameter. To convert, multiply the diameter by 3.14. A 1.75-inch bulb is about 5.5 inches around.
Large butt plug size chart: our size ladder
Every diameter below comes from the maker's listing on our live store, checked in October 2026. The last column is our own calculation of the cross-section, which is the area your body actually has to open around.
| Toy | Max diameter | Circumference | Cross-section | Price (CAD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gender X trio, small / medium / large | 0.9 / 1.0 / 1.1 in (23 / 25 / 28 mm) | 2.8 / 3.1 / 3.5 in | 0.64 / 0.79 / 0.95 sq in | $71.80 (set) |
| b-Vibe Bounce | 1.3 in (33 mm) | 4.1 in | 1.33 sq in | $42.00 |
| b-Vibe Jewel Heart, small / large | 1.34 / 1.59 in (34 / 40.5 mm) | 4.2 / 5.0 in | 1.41 / 1.99 sq in | $43.90 (set) |
| Lovense Hush 2, 1.5 in | 1.5 in (38 mm) | 4.7 in | 1.77 sq in | $143.89 |
| Lovense Hush 2, 1.75 in | 1.75 in (44 mm) | 5.5 in | 2.41 sq in | $144.89 |
| Lovense Hush 2, 2.25 in | 2.25 in (57 mm) | 7.1 in | 3.98 sq in | $152.89 |
Why each step feels bigger than it looks
Area grows with the square of the diameter. That is why a small change on paper can feel like a big change in your body.
Going from the 1.5-inch to the 1.75-inch Hush 2 adds only a quarter inch of width, but about 36% more area. The jump from 1.75 to 2.25 inches adds about 65% more area. That is the single biggest step on our shelf. Our decision rule: if a new size adds more than about 40% to the cross-section, spend extra sessions at the size before it.
How do you size up to a big butt plug safely?
Go slowly, use more lube than you think you need, and only move up when your current size feels easy. Comfort at one size is the only real sign you are ready for the next.
Cleveland Clinic puts it simply: "Start gradually and move your way up to what you're comfortable with." It also warns, "If you rush, you can cause serious injury, and no one wants that."
- Start where you are comfortable. Use a size that already slides in with no pain.
- Warm up every time. A finger or your smaller plug relaxes the muscle first.
- Lube both the toy and your body. Reapply as soon as anything starts to drag.
- Breathe slowly as you insert. Relax your body and let the toy guide in gently.
- Let the widest part pass slowly. Pause at the bulb, then let the neck settle into place.
- Keep the first sessions short. Medical News Today suggests starting with "a few minutes at a time."
- Repeat over several days. Only move up when the current size feels easy.
Cleveland Clinic calls the anal sphincters "elastic rings of muscle" that you can learn to relax. Stretching works best as a habit across weeks, not a goal for one night. A few minutes of relaxed practice beats one long, forced session.
Know the stop signs. Mild pressure and fullness are normal. Pain is not. Medical News Today, in a guide reviewed by E. Mimi Arquilla, DO, says "If someone experiences pain while inserting a butt plug, they need to take it out." Cleveland Clinic adds that sharp, shooting pain is a reason to "stop immediately."

What about a huge, giant or XL butt plug?
We do not stock anything wider than 2.25 inches, and that is a deliberate choice. Very wide sizes need long, gradual training, and pushing too far too fast risks tearing.
The lining of the anus is thin. Cleveland Clinic notes that this "thin tissue means it can tear easily." Medical News Today agrees: "Inserting butt plugs that are too big can cause pain and tearing."
If you are working toward a huge butt plug or an XL size, the same rules apply, just more slowly. Size up in small steps, keep sessions short and never push through pain. Also check the base: on a huge plug, the base must be much wider than the bulb so it cannot slip inside.
Which material and shape suit a larger plug?
Choose body-safe, non-porous silicone or metal with a tapered tip, a slim neck and a flared base. Shape decides comfort as much as diameter does.
Silicone vs metal
Silicone is soft, warms to body temperature and has a little give, which helps as you size up. Metal is rigid and heavier. Many people enjoy that firm weight, but you will notice it more when you move. The larger Jewel Heart plug weighs 140 g, compared with 85 g for the smaller one.
Planned Parenthood advises that "it's best to use one made of a body-safe, non-porous material." Avoid jelly rubber and unnamed blends. Our body-safe materials guide explains why.
Tapered tip, neck and flared base
A gradual taper lets the sphincter widen slowly instead of all at once. A slim neck lets the muscle close around the toy, so it stays put without pressure. The base keeps the toy outside your body.
Scarleteen is clear that "a flared base is a must" for anything used anally. Medical News Today explains that the flared base helps "prevent people from losing them inside the rectum." On a wider plug, check that the base is clearly wider than the bulb. The Hush 2 at 2.25 inches, for example, has a 2.64-inch base.
What lube works best for bigger sizes?
A thick water-based lube is the safest all-round choice, and it works with every silicone toy. Cleveland Clinic reminds readers that "your anus doesn't create its own lubricant," and that "if you're ever uncomfortable — try more lube."
Two anal formulas we stock:
- Sliquid Sassy Thick Water-Based Anal Gel, 2 oz ($16.95 CAD): a dense gel thickened with plant cellulose, glycerin-free and paraben-free.
- pjur Back Door Water-Based Anal Lubricant, 100 ml ($34.57 CAD): a water-based formula with hyaluronan, free of parabens and perfume.
We do not recommend numbing lubes. Pain is how your body tells you a size is too much, so you need to feel it. Planned Parenthood also warns: "Don't use silicone lube with silicone sex toys (unless you put condoms on them)." Our silicone vs water-based lube guide covers the details.
6 graduated picks we stock, smallest to largest
These six are in stock today and listed for anal use. Together they form a full size ladder, from 0.9 to 2.25 inches.
1. Gender X Gold Digger Metal Anal Plug Training Set
$71.80 CAD for three. This is the bottom rung. The rose-gold aluminum plugs measure 0.9, 1.0 and 1.1 inches across, each with three rounded beads on the shaft and a black gem base. The maker lists them as nonporous, phthalate-free and waterproof. You can warm or cool them in water for temperature play. We stock the set because small, even steps make a smooth start for anyone building toward larger sizes.
Who should skip it: anyone already comfortable above 1.1 inches, since even the largest one will feel familiar.
2. b-Vibe Bounce Beaded Silicone Anal Plug
$42.00 CAD. Bounce is the bridge from beginner to intermediate. It is soft, seamless silicone with graduated beads, 1.3 inches thick at its widest and 4.4 inches insertable. A thick flared base and a finger ring make removal easy. It is fully waterproof, so the shower works too. b-Vibe pitches it at intermediate players who want a feeling of fullness.
Who should skip it: people who prefer one smooth bulb, since the beads give a ridged feel on the way in and out.
3. b-Vibe Jewel Heart Metal Anal Plug Training Set
$43.90 CAD for two. Two zinc-alloy plugs with acrylic heart-shaped gem bases. The small one is 3.4 cm across and the large one 4.05 cm, about 1.59 inches. That large size is a solid first step into the "large" range. Each plug has a slim neck and a smooth, rounded bulb. b-Vibe rates the set gentle to intermediate.
Who should skip it: anyone planning long wear while walking around. At 140 g, the larger plug is heavy.
4. Lovense Hush 2 Vibrating Butt Plug, 1.5 inch
$143.89 CAD. The 1.5-inch Hush 2 adds vibration at the point where our "large" range begins. The tip is tapered, the base is wide, and you can control the vibrations with one button or the Lovense app, including from a distance. Lovense describes this size as one for people looking to further explore. It makes sense if you want one toy that works now and keeps its appeal as you size up.
Who should skip it: anyone who wants a motor-free toy they can boil or wash without care for a charging port.
5. Lovense Hush 2 Vibrating Butt Plug, 1.75 inch
$144.89 CAD. Lovense pitches the 1.75-inch Hush 2 at intermediate users. It is body-safe silicone with 4.45 inches insertable and a 2.5-inch base. It is rated IPX7, charges in 60 minutes and runs up to 240 minutes. For a deeper look at vibrating models, see our vibrating butt plug guide.
Who should skip it: anyone who has not yet been comfortable at about 1.5 inches. The added quarter inch means roughly 36% more area.
6. Lovense Hush 2 Vibrating Butt Plug, 2.25 inch
$152.89 CAD. This is the widest plug we carry. At 2.25 inches across, it sits firmly in the extra-large range, with the same 4.45-inch insertable length as the 1.75. The base is 2.64 inches wide. Lovense says this size is for people who have "already tried some smaller sizes," and we agree.
Who should skip it: anyone moving straight from a beginner plug. Spend real time at 1.75 inches first.

Safety, cleaning and when to see a doctor
A larger plug is safe for most people when it has a flared base, is made of body-safe material and is used slowly with enough lube. A few situations call for extra care.
- Health conditions: Medical News Today says people with "hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or prostate conditions" should talk with their doctor first.
- Bleeding or lasting pain: stop, and see a doctor if it does not settle.
- Wear time: Medical News Today notes that some people suggest no more than 2 or 3 hours, but says this advice is "purely anecdotal." Start with minutes, not hours.
- Sharing: Planned Parenthood warns that "sharing sex toys with other people can spread STDs." Use a condom on a shared toy and change it between partners.
Wash the plug before and after every use with mild soap and warm water or a toy cleaner. Keep water away from a charging port unless the maker rates the toy waterproof. Never move a toy from the anus to the vagina without washing it first. Our anal play safety guide goes deeper.
FAQ
What size is considered a large butt plug?
There is no industry standard. We use about 1.5 to 2 inches (38 to 51 mm) at the widest point as "large," and anything over 2 inches as extra large. Always check the maker's diameter, not the name.
How long does it take to size up?
It varies from person to person. Stay at each size until it feels easy, often over several sessions or weeks. Never rush a step to meet a deadline.
Is a bigger plug better?
Not by default. Fullness is personal, and a moderate size can feel just as satisfying. Choose by comfort and sensation, not by the number.
Can a large plug cause damage?
It can if you rush or skip lube. Medical News Today notes that plugs that are too big can cause pain and tearing. Go slowly and stop at any sharp pain.
What is the biggest butt plug you sell?
The Lovense Hush 2 at 2.25 inches (57 mm) in diameter, $152.89 CAD. We do not stock anything wider.
Should I use a training kit before a large plug?
Yes, if you are starting from small. A set like the Gender X trio or the Jewel Heart pair gives you even steps up, which is easier than one big jump.
Can I wear a large plug for hours?
Start with a few minutes. Some people suggest no more than 2 or 3 hours, but there is no medical evidence for a set limit. Remove it if anything hurts or feels numb.
